Turning a vision into a reality can be challenging. This award winning domestic garden proved anything is possible.

Access to the rear garden of this Grade II listed house was by way of a 34 inch passageway through the centre of the building. This was the only means of entry for anything coming onto or off site, including excavators and materials. The clients brief required that virtually everything currently in the garden should be reused and any additional materials should, as far as possible, be recycled, sourced locally, and blend with the existing 'listed' walls. Some existing trees and shrubs were containerised and taken to the contractor's yard until they could be returned and placed within the new design. The courtyard, originally on three levels, was redisgned and reduced to two levels; the quality of the resulting hard landscaping was excellent and incorporated unusual artefacts found during the site excavation.

Having been announced as the principle winner of the 2008 BALI award for Domestic Garden Scheme cost up to £20,000 the judges said, "Bond Landscaping have undertaken a very challenging project, the difficulty of which has to be seen to be believed. They have succeeded in addressing the client's design brief and enviromental concerns in an exemplary fashion and to her obvious delight. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding and has resulted in a beautiful period garden that is completely in keeping with the house and surrounding walls."

More importantly our customer had the following to say,

"Dear Sirs,

In April, you completed a total renovation of our courtyard garden here in Totnes. Now it is almost planted up and we wanted to let you know how delighted we are with the resut. The stone walls, slate coping. steps and courtyard, the circular bed and the Breedon gravel terrace are beautifully constructed and finshed and are going to be even more beautiful with time - clearly a garden built to last!

Our contact with Bonds has been a pleasure - the office staff and Gary (Hughes) were very efficient and helpful. The team who did the job - Gary (Price) with Wez, Matt and Mark were absolutely wonderful, not only knowledgable, careful and reliable (here by 8am every morning without fail) but also thoughtful and kind as they worked out the best way to do the job with the minimum disruption over the six weeks they were with us.

The only access to our garden is via the house, so everything had to come in and out through our narrow, crooked hall - including a mini digger with a one inch clearance each side - driven by Wez! The team had it all planned, laying a temporary wooden floor in the hall each day, with ramps at either end, taking it up again and cleaning up every evening so it looked as though nothing had been touched. It's hard to believe that a digger, wheelbarrows, large trees, earth, stones, gravel, lime, bricks, a heavy fountain and two big pots all travelled through our hall.

Although the garden is small, the job was complex. Gary took a wonderful design be the landscape architects (Rathbone Associates) and made it a reality. Not only was access limited but the design involved moving trees and tons of soil and levelling and aligning a new terrace, walls, a courtyard and steps within the framework of a site and an old house and existing walls where nothing is straight! This called for careful assessment and adjustment at each stage, often by eye, to ensure that the new work 'married' with the old features of the garden.

It was a pleasure to work with Gary and the team, they were utterly efficient, reliable and pleasant, we had a lot of fun doing the job and the end result is superb: we would have no hesitation in recommending them to anybody. Thank you."
